A. Barry Cappello UCLA Law ’65
Barry Cappello, managing partner of the Santa Barbara law firm Cappello & Noël LLP, was recognized as one of UCLA School of Law’s top 70 alumni out of more than 17,000 graduates. He was featured in the school’s Fall 2019 magazine that celebrated UCLA Law’s 70th Anniversary.
In addition, Cappello was singled out as one of the school’s five “Top Trial Lawyers.” The magazine highlighted Cappello’s career as a successful litigator and his financial contributions that resulted in the founding of the school’s Trial Advocacy Program.
The magazine noted Cappello’s groundbreaking work in lender liability law, landmark litigation involving the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill, which set the stage for the passage of the Clean Water Act, class actions in other environmental catastrophes, bank redlining cases and matters involving the Voting Rights Act.
The school’s Trial Advocacy Program includes the Cappello Courtroom where law students can hone their litigation skills in a courtroom setting. Prior to Cappello’s financial support, the school was without an official trial advocacy program or certificate of proficiency in courtroom training.
Students who successfully complete the prescribed trial advocacy courses and participate in UCLA Law’s Mock Trial program are eligible for the Cappello Certificate in Trial Advocacy at graduation. Cappello’s donations also go towards scholarships for students in the program.
Cappello (class of ’65) has been practicing law in Santa Barbara almost his entire career. The firm has a national reputation as one of the top litigation firms in the country.
